“Habits” and what is already true.

So this is something I’ve been thinking about quite a bit lately. I’m not sure I have come to a final consensus but its something that has been weighing heavy on my heart, and still looking to the freedom in realizing this truth, that I believe is there.

I’ve been listening to two message series on Ephesians, and Galatians. It seems that discussing our identity in Christ can be somewhat of a big deal. But should it really be? I mean Paul talks quite a bit about who we are in Christ. The sacrifice that He (Christ) made on the cross and dealing with us as humans. When we accept the fact that we are completely lost without Him, recognizing our depravity before a holy and just God, and we enter into this fellowship with a God that loves us and is sovereign. God simply sees Christ, the final sacrifice to cover the sins of men. Though we are not free from our sinful nature we are now entered into a relationship with Christ that renews us and who we are. We are a new creation. We are made anew and now have the ability to overcome the things that just simply pull us down.

I was sitting in church this past Sunday. The pastor was talking about making Jesus the main thing the main thing. While I agree with this. He made points that doing our quiet times, and prayer, etc are the keys. While I think they are important and nothing wrong with doing those things. It begs the question in my heart - why do we claim these things to be the the means to the end. Also why do we struggle with doing these “acts”? I think we honestly forget who we are in Christ. I think we hold emotion and feelings near and dear more than we care to admit. So when we have a bad day, or feeling week, we feel God is “punishing” us for the “acts” we are not doing. Maybe its just me but from as early as I can remember, I’ve been taught in church that because your having these problems is cause your not doing what your supposed to be doing. While this wasn’t always blatant, I think we held not only ourselves but others to this oppression. Following Christ is not based on merit or the amount of scriptures we read, or how long we spend on our knees praying. Why do we reduce “our quiet time” to a specific time of the day? Why do we only spend 15 minutes in prayer time. Or set aside time to do prayer walks early in the morning or special time at lunch or whatever. There is nothing wrong with doing this. But are we not supposed to be doing this all the time in everything we do? Why reduce it to 20 minutes a day? Why do we only hold people accountable to these very things when we should be holding one accountable to the very core of each other on a personal level.

I think we disregard God till were ready to meet with Him? Why do we set the time table. Why do we form these “habits” to fit our needs and our schedules. Shouldn’t our life be saturated with who God is. Worship embodies this very thing. Its not about song time, or a set aside time but its the very function of life.

Until we cultivate an understanding of what God has done for us, who God is, and who we are in Him. These things will come naturally out of Love. Make God the center of all that you do. Worship Him and be in communication with Him minute by minute, hour by hour. Saturate yourself in His presence and allow Him to reign in your Life. Its shaping my perspective of approaching God on His thrown. Just some of my thoughts….

The Christian life definitely can not be reduced down to a list of dos and donts and when we do so we really are not being a true follower of Jesus Christ. Are quiet times the right thing to do yes, is praying right yes, and so on and so forth is it something we should just check off our list no. I think because we are human we are quick to think oh man God is punishing me because I did this or that. However for the same reason we should want to do our quiet times and pray and all of those things is the same reason God chastises us because of love. Do we really love Christ? Then we desire to follow Him does God love us if the answer is yes then we have to say He chastises us? God is not out to get us when we are bad but he also does not just overlook sin whether we are a Christian or not.

I have been looking into the life of David and am just astounded by the fact that God loved David so much even after his sin of adultery. However There was still consequences for that sin. God did not love him less but that does not mean there are no consequences. The same gos for us when we sin there will be consequences but God does not love us less.
